The Nine Disciplines

Detachment
Releasing attachment without abandoning responsibility
Foundation
Detachment requires the facilitator to remain neutral and to separate responsibility for the process from responsibility for the group's decisions. It means being able to support an outcome even when it is not the one you would personally choose, while remaining fair and consistent with people regardless of personal preference. It also requires letting go of the need for status, recognition or credit, keeping the focus on the group and its work rather than on oneself.
AI-Era Definition
Detachment is the ability to evaluate AI-generated outputs, proposed solutions and one's own interpretations objectively, without allowing ego, prior investment, status, personal preference or the need to be right to distort judgement.
Detachment does not mean indifference or lack of responsibility. It means being willing to question your own assumptions, change your position when the evidence warrants it, and let go of a preferred answer when a better one emerges.

Focus
Keeping purpose ahead of possibility
Foundation
Focus requires the facilitator to bring attention, energy and commitment to the work the group is undertaking. It involves holding a clear direction while balancing personal detachment with genuine engagement in the group’s progress. The discipline is to remain devoted to what the work requires, without becoming distracted by competing demands or attached to a preferred outcome.
AI-Era Definition
Focus is the capacity to direct and sustain attention on the question, evidence and human priorities that matter in AI-supported work, without allowing the abundance of generated possibilities to determine where attention goes.
Focus requires choosing what deserves deeper examination, recognising when further prompting adds little value, and returning to the task when attractive alternatives pull thinking away from its purpose. It remains responsive to relevant discoveries while resisting unnecessary diversion.

Engagement
Retaining responsibility after delegation
Foundation
Engagement requires the facilitator to commit to the group and its work, bringing care, energy and a willingness to contribute. It involves taking people’s concerns seriously, remaining involved through difficulty and accepting responsibility for supporting progress. Balanced with Detachment, Engagement allows the facilitator to care deeply without taking ownership of every decision or needing to control the outcome.
AI-Era Definition
Engagement is the capacity to remain actively involved in the thinking, relationships and responsibilities of AI-supported work, even when a system can generate answers or complete tasks on our behalf.
Engagement means examining what AI contributes, listening to affected people, asking difficult questions and following through on decisions. It allows us to delegate appropriate tasks while retaining the human participation, learning and accountability the situation requires.

Interior Council
Listening to the inner voices that shape judgement
Foundation
Jenkins and Jenkins describe an Interior Council: the advisers, ideas, memories, images and people—living or dead, real or imagined—whose influence we carry within us. Their central insight is that having such a council is not itself the discipline. The discipline lies in choosing carefully which influences we listen to and allow to shape our actions.
In this module, these influences are described as inner voices. They develop over time through our mentors, relationships, culture, beliefs, responsibilities and lived experiences. Some call us toward courage, care and integrity. Others offer reassurance, self-protection or justification. Interior dialogue is the process of noticing these voices, understanding their conditioning and choosing deliberately how we will respond.
AI-Era Definition
Interior Council is the discipline of recognising and engaging the inner voices that shape our thinking, then choosing consciously which influences will guide an AI-assisted decision so that judgement remains humane, accountable and genuinely our own.
Interior dialogue is the practice within the discipline: listening to the voices, asking how they were formed, noticing what each is protecting or promoting, testing their claims and choosing what should guide action. AI may contribute information, challenge assumptions or offer alternatives, but it must not become the dominant voice—or take the chair of the Council.

Sense of Wonder
Seeing what is not there
Foundation
Sense of Wonder begins with the willingness to notice before categorising, explaining or deciding. It allows familiar assumptions about a person, group, problem or situation to be interrupted by curiosity. Instead of asking only, "What is this?", it creates space to ask, "What else might be possible here?" This openness supports creativity, learning and the ability to perceive possibilities that existing experience may not reveal.
AI-Era Definition
Sense of Wonder is the capacity to remain curious, receptive and imaginatively alive in the presence of uncertainty, so that possibilities can be perceived before they are reduced to familiar categories, inherited assumptions or machine-generated patterns.

Intentionality
Choosing what the technology is for
Foundation
Intentionality brings focused attention to purpose. It requires humility about our motives and limitations, empathy for those affected, deliberate preparation and continuing alignment between our actions and the outcome we are trying to achieve. Its foundational questions are: "What am I doing and why?" and "What is the group doing—and toward what end?"
AI-Era Definition
Intentionality is the capacity to clarify the purpose, values and human responsibility governing AI use before selecting a tool, generating an output or automating a process.
Intentionality prevents the tool from defining the task.

Awareness
Seeing the whole situation
Foundation
Awareness requires the facilitator to attend to what is happening within themselves, within the group and in the wider situation. It involves noticing assumptions, emotions, relationships and patterns that may otherwise pass unexamined. The discipline is to recognise the difference between what is observed and what is inferred, remaining open to information that challenges an initial understanding.
AI-Era Definition
Awareness is the capacity to recognise how our own responses, other people’s circumstances and the design and outputs of AI systems, influence an AI-assisted judgement.
Awareness includes noticing when confidence, convenience, emotion or a generated interpretation is shaping what we accept as true. It requires examining what the system makes visible, what it leaves out, whose perspective is missing and how those omissions may affect the decision.

Presence
Remaining in the human situation
Foundation
Presence concerns the quality of being the facilitator brings to the group. It involves being grounded, attentive and authentic, with a consistency between personal values and visible behaviour that helps others participate with confidence. Through Presence, the facilitator can encourage courage, possibility and commitment without relying on status or imposing themselves on the group.
AI-Era Definition
Presence is the capacity to remain grounded, attentive and recognisably human in AI-supported interactions, bringing our own voice, values and relational responsibility to the moment.
Presence requires listening directly, responding to the people and circumstances before us, and expressing judgements we can personally explain and stand behind. AI may assist our preparation and communication, while we remain responsible for the care, honesty and human connection our participation conveys.

Action
Acting without artificial certainty
Foundation
Action requires the facilitator to translate understanding into effective doing. It involves choosing an appropriate intervention, acting with courage and attending to what follows. Balanced with Awareness, Action responds to the situation as it is understood while remaining open to feedback, learning and correction.
AI-Era Definition
Action is the capacity to turn reflection, evidence and AI-assisted thinking into a timely, proportionate and accountable human response.
Action requires deciding what should happen, who will take responsibility and how the consequences will be reviewed. It means recognising when enough is known to proceed, when further inquiry is necessary and when restraint is the responsible choice. A generated recommendation becomes meaningful only through a considered decision and appropriate follow-through.
